WHY SELF CARE ISN'T SELFISH

I’ve been a working-mom for 16 years. I know a lot of women who try to ‘do it all’ and work while they raise a family, either alone or with a spouse. It’s a tough gig. It’s really tough to find time for yourself. But, I think it’s imperative to do so.

The amount of stressed-out women in the workforce is huge these days. We seem to try to do it all but at the cost of forgetting something or not looking after things. Ever forget an appointment because you have too much on your mind? Or leave the dishes undone so you can help with your kids’ homework? I know these things happen to me, and I’m not the only one. I get crabby when I’m burning out, and it affects everyone in the house. Want to add a caption to this image? Click the Settings icon.

So, to take some time for yourself, I think is so incredibly important. I know when overworked women take a few hours or a weekend to recharge, their overall outlook improves immensely.

The time you take to go to the gym, or out for a walk with a friend in order to reconnect with someone you feel really close to, will do so much to change your attitude and feeling of well-being. Chances are the circumstances won’t change one bit, but that won’t matter if you take that time to take care of yourself and get a break from all the stressors surrounding you. Even if it means the dishes don’t get done or your kid has to wait a little longer to finish his homework.

So, next time you feel like yelling at the kids or you start bickering with your husband, try to ask yourself when was the last time you did something for just you? Re-think the idea that taking time for yourself is selfish, and tell yourself that the best thing for my family is to take some time for me. And when you do, you will be a better mom, a better wife, and an all-around happier person.
